Homework
At Upton, we value highly the place of home learning in every child's education. We believe that homework is at it's most effective when it is enjoyable, engaging, related to the 'live' learning in school and is supported by adults in the home.
The staff at Upton Primary School recognise the value of younger children sharing their learning in the home situation with reinforcement activities. It is helpful for junior children to adopt a positive attitude towards homework and to develop a sensible routine which involves pacing themselves so that they do not leave everything to the last minute. We rely greatly on parental support and guidance to encourage pupils to be self-disciplined and to complete tasks on time.
Work should also be presented to a standard similar to that which is expected at school. However, work set should not be entirely dependent on adult help because of differing home circumstances and work/leisure commitments. Whilst homework is valuable for the reasons given above, it is important that it does not cause unnecessary pressure on children who are at a crucial stage of their personal and social development.
We recognise the importance of social interaction particularly with primary aged pupils and therefore we actively encourage their participation in extra-curricular activities and other organisations. Consequently, the homework programme needs to be regular to establish a routine but also flexible enough to allow for other commitments.
All homework is set on a weekly basis where children complete tasks that are linked to previous learning along with reading, spelling and mental maths. Our teachers will acknowledge their work, plan and prepare the next weeks and celebrate the children's effort and success throughout the school.
Children will be rewarded through the schools Achievement Points and Class dojo points for completing their homework to the best of their abilities. Both effort and achievement will be rewarded where the quality of each is agreed.
' We love the weekly homework as we get to practice skills we've already learnt in class'.
